BEAUMONT, Texas – It's almost hard to think that a year ago the Lamar University football team was in the midst of their regular season, thanks to delays brought on by COVID. A year later, the Cardinals were back on the field but this time it was for the traditional conclusion to spring practice hosting the annual Red and White scrimmage.
The Red team got the advantage and escaped with a seven-point victory, 28-21, over the White squad.
Both squads did the majority of their damage on the ground finishing the day with nearly 400 yards rushing (382 yards and five touchdowns).
Damashja Harris led all Cardinals with 13 carries for 128 yards and a touchdown. Harris' TD scamper went for 95 yards.
Hunter Batten added a 100-yard effort to go along with three touchdowns. He also added 12 receiving yards. Rice transfer
Khalan Griffin added 85 yards on four carries, including a 74-yard touchdown run. Sophomore
Daelyn Williams finished the day with 45 yards rushing.
Sophomore
Mike Chandler and transfer Jokolby Longino got the majority of snaps behind center. Chandler completed 3-of-7 passes for 37 yards and a touchdown, while Longino was 3-of-7 for 59 yards.
Dane Jentsch also got some reps at quarterback and finished the day with a 30-yard pass for a touchdown.
The Cardinals' defense was led by six tackles, including three for losses, from
Blake Gotcher, while
Tyson King added three tackles, including one TFL and broke up a pass.
