Cardinals Drop Series at UT Rio Grande Valley

EDINBURG, Texas – UT Rio Grande Valley used a nine-run sixth inning to pull away from Lamar University late recording a 14-2 victory Sunday afternoon at the UTRGV Baseball Stadium. The loss marks the first time this season that LU has not won a series having won five straight entering the week.

The Cardinals scored their two runs on nine hits but were hurt by three errors on the day.

Sophomore Trhea Morse (1-1) got the start for Big Red but ran into trouble in the first inning. He allowed two earned runs on five hits with a walk and a strikeout. He was one of seven Cardinals to take the mound Sunday.

The Vaqueros started Jesus Aldaz who went 6.0 innings for the win. He surrendered the two runs on eight hits, while striking out two and walking a batter.

Seven different Cardinals collected hits Sunday led by Chase Kemp and Ethan Ruiz. The LU duo both with 2-for-3 on the day.

Similar to Saturday's game, UTRGV jumped out to a 4-0 lead, with two-runs in the first and third innings. The Cardinals answered back with two in their half of the fifth. Big Red opened the inning with back-to-back hits. Ruiz led off the inning with a double and senior Kirkland Banks singled him home on the very next pitch. The Cardinals cut UTRGV's deficit in half off the bat of Kelby Weyler.

The Cardinals pulled to within two, but UTRGV responded with a run in the bottom half of the fifth and scored nine in the sixth to take a commanding lead. LU was unable to respond in their final at-bat.

Big Red closes out the current five-game road swing Tuesday when they travel to Thibodaux, La., to face Nicholls. The lone game against the Colonels is slated for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch from Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field.
