BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University had to move its match against Binghamton up to a 9 a.m. start due to a threat of rain in the area, but the Cardinals took advantage of their opportunities Monday to record a 7-0 victory over Binghamton.
The two coaches agreed to play singles first because of the weather and LU used the depth at the bottom of its lineup to build an insurmountable lead. Freshman
Noelia Lorca pitched a shutout with her 6-0, 6-0 decision over Binghamton's Caterina Casadei at No. 3 singles. Sophomore
Emmeline Polevoi followed suit moments later with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over the Bearcats' Brielle DeRoberts at line 6.
Between courts 3 – 6, the Cardinals recorded at least one shutout set on each court to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Despite the fact, the matches on courts 1 and 2 were yet to finish and doubles had not yet been played, the Cardinals had already wrapped up the overall team victory. With the victory locked up,
Elena Tairyan and
Ana Jolic took care of business on the first two courts, but both had to win in tiebreak fashion in their first set.
The Cardinals were just as impressive in doubles competition. Big Red won courts 1 and 3 by a combined score of 12-1, and they outlasted the Bearcats in a tiebreak on court 2 for the final score.
LU returns to action Saturday when they travel to Huntsville, Texas to take on Tarleton State for the first WAC match in program history. A start time for the match has not yet been set.
