BEAUMONT, Texas – Although the 2022-23 season has just gotten under way, the Lamar University coaching staff is making preparations for the future of the program with the addition of Jayden Barrs (G, 6-1, 190/Manor, Texas) Wednesday afternoon.
"I'm super excited to welcome Jayden Barrs to the Cardinal family," said LU head coach Alvin Brooks. "He comes to us from a great family background. His mother has done an incredible job raising him, and he's been coached the right way by his high school coach. Jayden is a high character kid who is also a really good student in the classroom."
A two-time first-team all-district selection, Barrs was a McDonald's High School All-America nominee after garnering district MVP honors at Manor. Following his junior season, Barrs proved he was a complete player getting the job done on both ends of the floor earning 18-5A District Defensive MVP.
Considered the 44
th-rated prospect in the state of Texas, according to the 2023 GreatAmericanShootout.com site, Barrs wrapped up his junior campaign averaging better than 16 points per game, 6.1 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.8 steals per game.
"Jayden gives us a combo guard who can play at both guard spots," said Brooks. "He is a super-athletic guy who has the ability to play at the rim. He is also a threat on the defensive end of the floor – a high-level defender. Jayden is a winner."
A true definition of a student-athlete, Barrs is also a success in the classroom. Following his sophomore and junior campaigns, Barrs was also named to the Academic All-District team.
