BEAUMONT, Texas - Cardinal fans got to see the first competitive action of Lamar University's women's basketball team at the Montagne Center. Facing NCAA DIII East Texas Baptist University in an exhibition game, LU would use a dominant defensive second half to beat the Tigers 69-43.
Offensively, Big Red outshot ETBU 41.2%-29.2% in the contest. Portia Adams was the story for the game making 10-of-18 from the field with 29 points, including six three-pointers. Sabria Dean poured in 17 points while Akasha was one rebound shy of a double-double (10 points, nine rebounds). For ETBU, Bridget Upton and Jamara Levy each tallied eight points while Mollie Dittmar and Brooke Webster scored seven each.
ETBU would give LU a tough first half as they would make the score close to 17-13 at the end of the first quarter and 29-25 at halftime. Fortunately, LU would take command of the game by outscoring the Tigers 40-18 in the second half. This would include a 21-4 quarter that saw the Cardinals make 69.2% and holding the Tigers to 7.7% from the field.
The Cardinals will make the road trip to Waco to open their regular season with a Monday night contest against Baylor. The tipoff will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Ferrell Center.
