Cards Struggle at New Mexico State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State jumped out to a big first-half lead and never looked back defeating Lamar University, 51-14, Saturday afternoon at Aggie Memorial Stadium. The loss drops Big Red to 1-9 (.100) on the season.

The Cardinals finished the day with 254 yards of offense, including 129 on the ground. New Mexico State had too much firepower for LU finishing day with 451 yards of total offense, including 225 on the ground.

Freshman Mike Chandler got the start for LU and completed 4-of-14 passes for 33 yards. He eventually gave way to senior Nick Yockey who completed 7-of-13 passes for 88 yards and a touchdown pass (to Jalen Dummett).

The Cardinals' ground attack was led by Hunter Batten and R.J. Carver. Batten had three carries for a team-high 44 yards and a score, while Carver had a team-high eight rushes for 37 yards.

It was a tough afternoon for the men in the Red and White and it started on the Cards first possession. The Aggies' defense scored the first points of the game which came on the sixth play from scrimmage, Andre Seldon picked off Chandler's pass at the Aggie 19 and returned it 81 yards for the score. The pick six sparked a 37-0 run and they took that advantage into the locker room.

The Cardinals' offense struggled in the opening half compiling just 63 total yards, while NMSU finished the half with 270 yards. The Aggies also gained an advantage of more than for nine minutes in terms of time of possession in the game's first 30 minutes.

The Aggies pushed their lead to 51-0 before LU got on the scoreboard. That score came from Hunter Batten on a season-long 38-yard run up the middle for the senior. LU tacked on another score midway through the fourth when Yockey connected with Dummett from five yards out for the game's final score.

Big Red closes the season with the annual Battle of the Border Saturday, Nov. 19th, in Lake Charles, La. The game will kick off at 7 p.m. from Cowboy Stadium.
