BEAUMONT, Texas - Having to battle with a scrappy Jarvis Christian team, the Lamar University women's basketball team would dominate the second half by outscoring the Bulldogs 49-25 en route to a 78-55 home opening victory. The win evens LU's record to 1-1 overall.
Â
Sabria Dean (25 points) and
Portia Adams (20 points) led the way as they combined for 45 points in the contest while dishing out five assists each. Dean was also effective defensively with six steals. LU finished outshooting JCC 42.4%-39.3% from the field and 72.0%-66.7% from the free throw line.
Â
LU began the first quarter going on an 8-0 run before the Bulldogs got on the board. However, JCC would get to within two before LU retook a seven-point lead at 19-12. Still, JCC ended the quarter with a 6-2 run to trail 21-18. A big reason why was them making 8-of-13 shots from the field in the quarter while LU went 8-for-21.
Â
The second quarter proved to be a tough one for the Cardinals. Â The Cardinals would shoot their lowest percentage of the quarter with 23.1% going 3-of-13. JCC held them to eight points while they would tally 12 in the quarter. The Bulldogs grabbed a one-point lead at 30-29.
Â
Momentum carried over for the Bulldogs to start the third as they went on a 7-2 run to take the lead at 37-31. Adams then went on to score nine straight points for Big Red to retake the lead. But it was Dean who went into takeover mode scoring 13 of the final 17 Cardinal points in the quarter. By shooting 9-of-14 in the quarter, the Cardinals built their lead to 55-48 through three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, LU's defense would concede only seven points while they went on to score 23. Other Cardinals would step up including a pair of three's from
Malay McQueen and six points from
Alyiah Craft off the bench. Dean and Adams each tallied four points as Big Red maintained a double-digit lead throughout the quarter en route to the victory.
LU is back on the road next Wednesday to meet with Prairie View at 7:00 p.m.
