Box Score FORT WORTH, Texas – Sophomore
Jakevion Buckley scored 22 points as Lamar University went toe-to-toe with TCU – the nation's 14
th-ranked team – Friday evening, but the Horned Frogs managed to escape with a 77-66 victory at Schollmaier Arena.
Buckley was one of four Cardinals in double-figures Friday as LU shot just a tick under 40 percent for the game (25-of-64/.391). Unfortunately, the Cardinals struggled from long-range converting just four of their 17 three-pointers on the night.
Junior
Chris Pryor recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore
Terry Anderson added 10 points and seven boards. Junior
Adam Hamilton also finished the night with 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
Led by 26 points from Mike Miles, TCU was 30-of-69 (.435) from the floor. The Horned Frogs had similar struggles from three-point range shooting it at just a 25-percent clip, but they got off more shots converting eight triples on the night. The Horned Frogs also ended the game with an eight-rebound advantage on the boards.
After TCU jumped out to an 8-2 lead to start the game, the Cardinals battled right back to take a one-point lead, 11-10. The game remained close until the 4:49 mark when the Horned Frogs found a surge of momentum. TCU closed the half on a 10-4 run to take a nine-point lead into the locker room.
The momentum was short lived, as LU again would have an answer. After pushing their lead to 13 points, they began to whittle away at the deficit. Big Red got a Buckley three-ball with 18:49 remaining. The triple sparked a 18-8 run that saw Big Red pull within three with 14:03 remaining. Following another Buckley basket just moments later, the Cardinals were within one.
LU remained within striking distance until late in the contest with the Horned Frogs made a late surge to escape with the victory.
The Cardinals will be back in action Monday when they return home to host Huston-Tillotson. The game against the Rams will tip off at 7 p.m. from the Montagne Center.
