Cardinals Eye Date with New Mexico State

| By:
BEAUMONT, Texas – In an odd quirk to the 2022 football scheduled, the Lamar University Cardinals are traveling west Saturday to play an FBS non-conference opponent – New Mexico State – in the next to last week of the regular season. The Cardinals (1-8/1-4 SLC) are looking for their second win in the past three weeks when they square off against NMSU, and their first road win of the season.

The Aggies, on the other hand, have turned things around after a slow start to the season. New Mexico State has won three of its last four games in a stretch that includes a win over rival New Mexico. The team's only setback during that time was a two-touchdown loss to Florida International.

The Cardinals trail the all-time series to NMSU, 4-6 (.400), a mark that includes a 2-4 (.333) record in Las Cruces. Saturday's contest will be the first meeting between the two schools since the 1976 season when Big Red defeated NMSU by four in front of their fans. The series dates back to the 1964 season, which was also won by the Cards. Historically, the series has been close, with all but two games being decided by 11 points or less. Six of the meetings have been decided by five points or less.

Saturday's contest will kick off at noon (1 p.m. Central time) from Aggie Memorial Stadium in Las Cruces. The game broadcast live on Newstalk 560 KLVI and televised on Bally Sports Arizona.
