BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University head coach Alvin Brooks will open his second season at the helm of the Cardinals' program Wednesday when Big Red hosts North American in an exhibition contest. The game against the Stallions will tip off at 7 p.m. from the Montagne Center and is free to the public.
The Cardinals enter the 2022-23 campaign looking to bounce back from a two-win season last year. The first step in doing that is a completely rebuilt roster from last year. LU's coaching staff went out and added 10 new players to the roster, including four junior college transfers. Among the four transfers three were named JUCO All-Americans (Terry Anderson, Adam Hamilton and Chris Pryor).
The incoming recruiting class doesn't even include two redshirts from last year's squad – Brian Gordon (G, 6-2, Fr.) and Trey Harris (G, 6-5, Fr.). The returning letterwinners from last year's team include center Valentin Catt (6-10, 232, So.), guard Casey Brooks (5-9, 160, So.) and Brock McClure (G/F, 6-6, 210, So.).
That group will be joined by transfers Jakevion Buckley (G/F, 6-0, 162), Pryor (G, 5-11, 152), Anderson (F, 6-6, 190) and Hamilton (C, 6-9, 210), to go along with incoming freshmen Cody Pennebaker (G, 6-5, 187, Brooklyn Park, Minn.), Nate Calmese (G, 6-2, 164, Gilbert, Ariz.), Jason Thirdkill, Jr. (F, 7-7, 189, Fr.), Yuto Yamanouchi-Williams (C, 6-10, Fr.), Max Pearcy (G, 6-1, 170, Fr.) and James Spencer (F, 6-6, Fr.).
Following Wednesday's exhibition contest, the Cardinals will open regular season play Monday, Nov. 7
th against St. Thomas (TX). Before hitting the road for a contest at TCU (Nov. 11). The Cardinals will play two of their first three games in front of the hometown crowd.
Tuesday's exhibition contest will not be broadcast or televised, but all regular-season games will be carried on Newstalk 560 KLVI, and all home games will be streamed live on ESPN+.
