BEAUMONT, Texas - For the first time all season, Lamar University's soccer team will enter a match with a chance to rebound from a disappointing loss. No longer undefeated, but still controlling first place in the Southland Conference, LU will take on their long-time rival McNeese this Sunday at 1:00 PM.
Home Winning Streak Snapped
The Cardinals suffered their first loss of the season when they fell 2-0 to Northwestern State. This was the first loss at home since Sept. 30th of last year when they fell against Stephen F. Austin. They were only able to get four shots off while the Demons would fire 16.
Nicole Panis made six saves in goals.
On the Plus Side
Despite the loss, LU remains in first place of the conference with a five point lead on second place Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, who drew with McN 1-1 on Friday night. LU also leads by six points on Texas A&M-Commerce, who defeated Nicholls 2-0.
Nicole Panis Win Watch List
Panis remains tied all-time in the wins leaderboard with 26 alongside Lauren Lovejoy (2014-2017). One more win would move her past Lovejoy for most in program history. This would also be a new season high for Panis as she is tied for nine, which was how many games she won last season. She is also fourth all-time in saves with 242.
History vs. the Cowgirls
In this tight rivalry, LU and McN have met each other 13 times with Big Red owning a 7-6 edge. This comes after the Cardinals shutout the Cowgirls 3-0 in 2019.
Kaisa Juvonen scored one of the three goals in the win.
Scouting the Cowgirls
McN is 4-5-3 overall and 2-2-3 in the conference after a 1-1 tie against AMCC. Magalie Depot leads the Cowgirls in points with 12 (four goals, four assists), which include three game-winners. Collectively, McN's goalkeepers have a combined goals against average of 2.33.
