BEAUMONT, Texas - After starting their season on such a high with 10 games played without a loss, Lamar University's soccer team finally came back down to earth Friday evening falling to Northwestern State, 2-0. Despite suffering their first loss of the season, LU remains in first place with a 9-1-1 overall record and 6-1 in Southland Conference play.
The biggest problem for LU was their inability to get scoring chances. NSU outshot the Cardinals 16-4 with one shot being on target for LU.
Christine Kitaru,
Arely Alaniz,
Abby Gemza, and
Annika Kassenbrock would each have one shot in the match.
Nicole Panis picked up six saves.
The first half was controlled by the Demons, who managed to outshoot LU 6-1 all throughout the half. LU's one chance came in the seventh minute as they were able to get a shot past the keeper only to have an NSU defender to make a great defensive play to clear the ball. NSU's offensive pressure broke through in the 34th minute as they scored the first goal for a 1-0 lead entering the break
It took only 17 seconds into the second half for the Demons to record their second goal of the match. From that point on, LU struggled to overcome an NSU defense, who held them to three shots, which included a nearly 40-minute stretch in which LU failed to get a shot off. Friday night's game was the second time LU failed to score this season.
The Cardinals will look to get back in the win column when they will host McNeese at 1:00 p.m on Sunday.
