BEAUMONT, Texas - Once again undefeated entering their next match, Lamar University sets their sites on the first of two home games this weekend against Northwestern State University. LU's match with the Demons will start at 7:00 PM on Friday night.Â
One Player Down? No Problem
Despite winning their most recent game 1-0 against Southeastern Louisiana, the Cardinals had to overcome an obstacle as they were forced to play with 10 players due to a red card. Still,
Christine Kitaru's lone goal on the assist from
Kaisa Juvonen was just enough to get the win. Panis managed three saves, including a critical one in the 81st minute to keep the lead.
Like Baseball, Three Hits in Ten Attempts.
In only 10 games this season, LU has only allowed three goals and have not one game where they have given up more than one. This is the fewest allowed in the conference and they are just one of two teams to allow under 10 goals. NSU is second with nine.
Cardinals Defense and Attack Devastatingly Worse Than Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds"
In six of their last seven games, LU has not allowed any goal from the opposition. At the same time, they have outscored their opposition 13-1 in that same stretch. Teams that have had stretches include Buffalo (seven), Utah Tech (seven), Loyola (MD) (seven in eight ), Virginia (nine in 11), Indiana (eight), and Idaho (10).
You Get An Assist! You Get An Assist! You Get An Assist! You Get An Assist! Â
13 different Cardinal players each have an assist this season to date.
Isela Ramirez leads LU with six assists while
Cariel Ellis is second with four. LU is one of two teams in the Southland Conference to have nine goal scorers and 13 players with assists alongside with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (who have 14 players who have an assist).
This Goal Ain't Big Enough For The Two of Us
With the last win against SELA, Panis is now tied for the all-time record for most wins by a goalkeeper in LU program history with 26 wins alongside Lauren Lovejoy (2014-2017). A win against NSU on Friday would move her first all-time. Panis has also broken the school shutout record of 14 set by Bailey Fontenot (2011-14). Including last week, Panis has also won four Southland Conference Goalkeeper of the Week honors this season and five in her career (one was in the Western Athletic Conference).
Ten Going On 11
LU's last win against Incarnate Word means that LU's home winning streak has gone to 10 games. A win on Friday would match the second longest winning streak of 11 set by the 2019 team (9/13/19-11/10/19). The longest home winning streak was 14 games that lasted from Oct. 28, 2016 to August 19, 2018.
Last Time vs. the Demons
In what was then a battle of the top two teams in the Southland Conference, LU used two second half goals from
Cariel Ellis and
Abby Gemza to shutout the Demons 2-0. Panis earned four saves in the win. The Cardinals are 10-4-2 all-time against NSU and have won five of their last six meetings.
