BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University has split its last four outings and will look to make it three of five Thursday when they travel to San Antonio to face UIW – the Southland Conference's other Cardinals. The match at UIW will be the second of a three-match road swing that will conclude Saturday at Houston Christian.
After dropping eight straight, including seven consecutive league matches, the Cardinals (8-14/2-9 SLC) are starting to right the ship with two wins in their last four matches. Big Red jumped a spot in the conference standings last week and sits ninth overall a win up on Nicholls. Big Red enters the week just two back of UIW and if everything goes their way they could climb another rung of that ladder by the end of the week.
Currently eighth in the league standings, UIW enters the week with a 5-16 (.238) overall record and 4-7 in Southland Conference play. San Antonio's version of the Cardinals have seemingly also turned the corner having won two of the previous three matches and coming off a shutout over Nicholls. Despite their recent success, UIW has found it tough to play in front of their home fans this year sporting a mark that is two wins under .500 (3-5). Thursday's contest is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from McDermott Center.
The Cardinals will turn right back around two days later and face Houston Christian in Houston. While the Huskies have sat atop the Southland standings for the majority of the year, they're not unbeatable. HCU is 16-8 (.667) overall on the season, but they have dropped three matches in league play and sit tied atop the standings (8-3) with McNeese. Saturday's contest will begin at 11 a.m. from Sharp Gym.
