SOCCER CENTRAL: Houston Christian

| By:
BEAUMONT, Texas - Picking up a key win against Texas A&M-Commerce last Friday night, Lamar University's soccer team will look to keep their momentum going west on I-10 to meet against Houston Christian University this Friday night down. This next road game will start at 5:00 PM.

Move Over Maxima. There's a New Queen of the Netherlands.
By beating AMC 2-1, Nicole Panis set a new program record for most career wins with 27, which had been previously held by Lauren Lovejoy (2014-17). Panis also set a new season high for her wins having been LU's goalie for each of the 10 victories.

She's BAAAAAAAACK!
After missing out on the two games prior to last Friday night, Carriel Ellis made the most of her return by scoring both of LU's goals in the win over AMC. These goals came in a five minute span after LU trailed 1-0 early in the game. This performance gave Ellis her second Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors. Ellis now has eight goals on the season, which only trails Christine Kitaru (nine), who dished out both assists on the goals to Ellis along with Meg Sheppard and Laura Linares. Six times this season did the connection between Ellis and Kitaru lead to goals.

Back-to-Back Double-Digit Wins
For the second season in a row, LU has won 10 or more games after LU finished with a 10-8-2 record last season. It also marks the sixth time in program history the Cardinals reached this milestone. All-time, the record for most wins is 18 held by the 2017 squad. The Cardinals are also three conference wins away from matching their best marks held in 2017 and 2019.

Getting Tight In The Standings
Despite being in first place of the SLC standings, LU (7-1-1, 22 points) is five points clear of Northwestern State (5-2-2, 17 points) and six points clear of this weekend's opponents in HCU (5-3-1, 16) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (5-3-1, 16 points). NSU is taking on AMCC this Friday night. LU can clinch the conference title with a win against HCU on Friday along with a tie between NSU and AMCC.

History vs. the Huskies
In 11 meetings all-time, LU is 5-3-3 against the Huskies. Big Red has won the last four meetings against HCU, including a 3-1 victory on Feb. 28, 2021. Hollie Massey scored twice in the win with Kitaru giving out an assist to one of them.

Scouting the Huskies
Formerly Houston Baptist University before a midseason name change, HCU is coming off a 2-0 win over Southeastern. Mia Salas and Emily Jaimes scored the goals while Chloe Bagshaw tallied six saves, which helped garner her SLC goalkeeper of the week honors. Katie Marker leads the Huskies with five goals and 11 points despite taking nine shots total.
