BEAUMONT, Texas – A founding figure of the Provost Umphrey Law Firm, and local philanthropist, Walter Umphrey, passed away Tuesday at his home in Beaumont.
Umphrey was one of the great legal minds serving in Texas and federal court rooms for more than 50 years. Just as strong as his commitment to the law, was his support of Lamar University and LU athletics.
Umphrey was a guiding force that helped bring football back to LU in 2009 through generous donations. The stadium which serves as the home of Cardinals' football still bears his name – Provost Umphrey Stadium.
"I know I speak for our entire department when I say we will be forever grateful for his support of Lamar University and specifically Cardinal Athletics," said LU Director of Athletics
Marco Born. "He was instrumental in bringing back football in 2009 and he will be missed dearly. His family and friends will be in our prayers."
Details for the memorial service are pending and have yet been release.
