WAC Opener Ends in a Tie

ABILENE, Texas – Lamar University goalkeeper Nicole Panis faced only two shots on goal, blocking both, as Big Red's defense allowed just nine shots, but after 110 minutes of action Friday's Western Athletic Conference opener at Abilene Christian ended in a 0-0 tie.

The tie moves LU to 3-5-1 on the season and 0-0-1 in conference play.

"I thought this was a really good game," said LU head coach Steven Holeman. "Both teams fought hard. Honestly, I felt like this was one of our best games to date. This has never been an easy place to play, so any time you come to Abilene and get a point that is never a bad thing.

"We had some players step up and play in some roles they're not used to playing in. I thought they played extremely well and I'm proud of them, especially for this being our first overtime game of the year," said Holeman.

The Cardinals pressed the attack all night nearly doubling up on number of shots taken, to go along with shots on goal. Big Red recorded 16 shots, while holding their opponents to nine. Shots on goal finished, 6-2, in favor of LU. The Cardinals also finished the night with a 10-3 advantage in corners.

The Cardinals return to action Sunday when they face Chicago State. The game against the Cougars will begin at noon. in the Windy City.
