Cards Drop Game One, Game Two to Resume Saturday

CONWAY, Ark. – The Lamar University softball program dropped game one of Friday's doubleheader with Central Arkansas, but inclement weather came into the surrounding areas at the beginning of game two and before long, game two was called in the bottom of the third.

GAME 1 – Central Arkansas 7, Lamar 0

From the opening pitch to the final, Central Arkansas and their pitching staff went to work against the Cardinals in the first inning, making the Big Red go down in order. The Sugar Bears continued their impressive season-long offense with two runs in the first.

The second inning saw a similar fate for Lamar as the Big Red went onto go down in order. The Central Arkansas offense kept up in the second after a single up the middle was able to bring in one run then another single, which was a bunt, was able to score another run after an error by the Cardinal defense.

In the third inning, the Sugar Bears went onto extend their lead by two runs again this time on a double to left field by Whitehouse that brought home Harris, and then another double to left field that brought in Whitehouse. A ground out to short ended the inning for the Sugar Bears and sent it to the fourth.

The Cardinals went onto go down in order, but the Sugar Bears offense was halted as junior pitcher Aaliyah Ruiz changed up the pitch count and was able to keep the UCA bats at bay in the fourth.

Central Arkansas added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a solo home run by Shepard to center field. The Sugar Bears went onto complete the perfect game as Jordan Johnson tossed the complete game for UCA.

GAME 2 – Central Arkansas 8, Lamar 1 (Bottom of the 3rd, No outs)

The Sugar Bears came out with another impressive pitching performance getting the Cardinals to go down in order to begin game two. Wildeman of UCA was able to get a single to get the Sugar Bear offense started. She went onto steal second and third, giving Central Arkansas a runner in scoring position, but an error by the Cardinals defense on the play allowed Wildeman to continue to home to give the Sugar Bears a one run lead. The Cardinals gave up just one more hit in the inning before a ground out by Harris sent it to the second.

Lamar responded swiftly in the second as the Big Red was able to get runners on early starting with a single to right field by junior Kaylee Ancelot. A sacrifice bunt by Hinojosa was able to get Ancelot to second. Sophomore Hannah Kinkade was able to connect on a single to right field, but an error by the UCA player caused Kinkade to advance all the way to third and for Ancelot to score, evening things up. Central Arkansas broke out the big bats in the bottom of the second, racking in seven runs on four hits and three errors.

The Sugar Bear pitcher went back to work to begin the third getting a ground out and a strike out before allowing a walk. The walk did not bother her as she was able to get the next Cardinal batter swinging at the plate.

It was at this time the umpires convened and called a weather delay for the time being. After further discussion between the coaching staffs and umpires, both teams agreed to halt game two until 1:05 p.m. tomorrow at the beginning of the bottom of the third. Game three while begin after the conclusion of game two.
