Michael Ks Seven as LU Earns Split with A&M-Corpus Christi

| By:
BEAUMONT, Texas – Junior Trevin Michael scattered nine hits over eight innings allowing just three runs to guide Lamar University to a 6-3 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Vincent-Beck Stadium. Michael improves to 4-2 on the season, while junior Jack Dallas pitched a scoreless ninth to record his 10th save of the season, and second in as many days, as LU battles back to split the season series with the Islanders.

Michael and Dallas combined to strike out nine Islanders, with Michael recording seven Ks. Sophomore Ryan Snell led the way offensively for the Red and White with a three-hit effort. In fact, the Cardinals got big production from the eighth and ninth spot in the order as Snell and senior Cole Girouard combined to go 5-for-7 with three runs scored. Sophomore Ben MacNaughton recorded a 2-for-4 day with an RBI, while junior Chase Kemp went 2-for-5 with 3 runs driven in.

The Islanders gave the ball to Hayden Thomas Sunday, but he took the loss after surrendering five runs (all earned) on eight hits in four innings pitched.

The Cardinals ended the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third when Snell and Girouard led the off the inning with back-to-back singles. After MacNaughton sacrificed both runners over, Kemp bashed one off the wall in left driving in both runners.

The two-run third started a run of three consecutive innings that would see the Cardinals score. After the Islanders were gifted a run on a wild pitch in the fourth, Big Red battled back in the home half with two. Deric LaMontagne led off the inning with a double and was immediately moved to third following a balk. Two batters later, sophomore Kelby Weyler singled through the right side plating LaMontagne. LU's second run of the inning came on a fielder's choice scoring Weyler.

After a scoreless frame from Michael in the fifth, the Cardinals were right back at the plate. LU added to its lead in the bottom of the 5th. After a leadoff single, senior Anthony Quirion doubled into the gap in left center scoring George all the way from first.

A&M-Corpus Christi made things interesting in the sixth when they scratched out two runs to trim the deficit down to two, 5-3, but Michael kept them off the board in the seventh and eighth, and the Cards tacked on an insurance run in their last at-bat before Dallas slammed the door shut in the ninth.

The Cardinals return to action Friday when they travel to Abilene, Texas to face Abilene Christian in a four-game series. The first pitch of game one is slated for 6:05 p.m.
