BEAUMONT, Texas – The doubles point was in no way indicative of how Saturday's match between UIW and Lamar University would turn out, fortunately. In the matchup between the Southland Conference's two Cardinals, UIW jumped out to an early 1-0 lead following an impressive showing in doubles only to fall to LU, 6-1.
San Antonio's version of the Cardinals picked up wins on courts three and two, respectively, and had a lead on court one when the match was halted. It was at that point that any chance UIW had to win the match came to an end.
The good guys came out and immediately asserted their authority in the first set on all six courts. The only set that was in question was at line one, but sophomore
Axel Vila Antuna held on for a 7-6 (7-5) victory in the opening set.
Junior
Carlos Paton Canal officially tied the match for the Cardinals with his 6-2, 6-2, decision over UIW's Dennis Boisseau at No. 4 singles. Despite playing to a tiebreak in the first set, Vila Antuna gave LU the lead with his 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 decision over Marwin Kralemann at No. 1.
From that point on, Big Red never looked back posting rapid fire victors on courts 3, 2 and 5 to lock up the overall victory. The only match that had any remaining excitement was on court six where junior
Joshua Sundaram was heading to a tiebreak, up a set. As if copying Vila Antuna's opening-set performance, Sundaram recorded a 7-6 (7-5) decision in the second to win his match.
The Cardinals (8-7/1-1 SLC) will have four days to prepare for their next match against New Orleans. The contest is slated to begin at 2 p.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
