BEAUMONT, Texas – The date of April 3
rd is not synonymous with football regular-season finales, but in a year dominated by COVID that is the situation that Lamar University is in this season. The Cardinals head to Hammond, La., Saturday for the regular-season finale against No. 25 (STATS FCS Top 25 poll) Southeastern Louisiana.
In a season full of cancellations and postponements, the Cardinals enter Saturday's contest looking to close the regular season at .500. The Cardinals (2-3/2-3 SLC) also head to Hammond looking to close the regular season with consecutive wins.
Big Red is coming off an impressive 31-23 victory on Senior Day – a game that saw LU pick off three first-half passes – and hold the football for more than 40 minutes. The victory over the Demons moved LU into fifth place in the league standings just a game back of Southeastern in the loss column.
The Lions (2-2/2-2 SLC) have won two of their last three games to sit fourth in the league standings, but are coming off an 11-point setback at UIW. All of Southeastern's games this year have come right down to the wire with the biggest point differential coming in their 11-point loss to UIW. The games against Sam Houston, McNeese and Northwestern State were all within five points.
The Cardinals trail the all-time series to Southeastern Louisiana, 4-8 (.333) overall, and are 2-5 (.286) against the Lions in Hammond. The Cardinals enter Saturday looking to reverse the recent trend in the series. LU has dropped three straight and seven of the last eight meetings. The last LU win came during the 2016 season when LU recorded a 38-14 victory.
Saturday's contest will kick off at 6 p.m. from Strawberry Stadium. It will be broadcast live on
Newstalk 560 KLVI and streamed live on
ESPN+.
