CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Lamar University stepped on the court Friday morning playing for a share of the Southland Conference regular-season title, but it was not to be as the Cardinals dropped a 6-1 decision to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The loss drops LU to 10-8 (.556) on the season, and 3-2 (.600) in Southland Conference play.
The match, which was originally slated to be played Thursday, was pushed back nearly 24 hours due to inclement weather in the Corpus Christi area. It was then rescheduled for 10:30 Friday morning and had to be pushed back another hour before the two teams were finally allowed to step on the court.
The Islanders took the opening lead of the match after winning the doubles point with victories on courts No. 2 and 3. Big Red battled back to tie the match at 1 with a victory from sophomore
Axel Vila Antuna at No. 1 singles. The Valencia, Spain native outdueled A&M-Corpus Christi's Kyohei Yamanaka, 6-3, 4-7, 10-5 for the tough three-set victory.
Unfortunately, the Cardinals were in a tough spot the rest of the way down the singles ladder dropping the first set on the five remaining courts. The Islanders held on for wins on the remaining courts for the victory.
The loss means that LU will be the No. 2 seed at the Southland Conference Championships which gets under way Saturday, April 24 from the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Complex.
