FRISCO, Texas – The Lamar University women's basketball program has been honored with multiple spots on the postseason award list, announced the Southland Conference on Tuesday afternoon.
Freshman
Sabria Dean, senior
Jadyn Pimentel and redshirt junior
Micaela Wilson all earned recognition by the Southland Conference. "As a program, we are excited to see our ladies hard work be recognized by the rest of the conference," said head coach
Aqua Franklin.
Freshman Sabria Dean – Freshman of the Year
The freshman from Mineola, Texas recorded six contests where she tallied double figures as she played a vital role down the home stretch of the Southland Conference portion of the schedule. She averaged 8.1 points per game in conference play while shooting 37 percent from the field. Dean added 12 contests this season where she recorded two or more assists and finished the season second on the team in assists.
"Sabria hasn't scratch the surface of how good she is going to be," said head coach
Aqua Franklin. "She brings toughness, resilience, effort and a want to mentality everyday no matter what! As a staff we know what we are going to get out of her every game. She makes everyone around her better. The sky is the limit for her."
Senior Jadyn Pimentel – Defensive Player of the Year/All-Defensive Team
The St. Louis, Missouri native continued her defensive presence on the court as she ended the regular season with 58 steals and 65 rebounds. The senior also leads the Cardinals with 79 assists, which most of came off the defensive end of the court in transition situations. She currently ranks third in program history in career steals with 303. This year's honor on the All-Defensive Team marks her second consecutive defensive team placement.
"JP's tenacity is something you cannot teach," said head coach
Aqua Franklin. "She takes great pride on the defensive. Her quickness and her ability to get her hands on balls pose a nightmare for opposing teams. After back-to-back All-Defensive team selections, she has made her presence felt in the Southland Conference and I couldn't be prouder of this young lady!"
Redshirt Junior Micaela Wilson – Southland Conference First Team All-Conference
After sitting out last season due to NCAA transfer rules, the Rayville, La., native led the Cardinals for the better part of the 2020-21 season in scoring and ending the regular season averaging 12.2 points a game and rebounded the ball a program-best 147 times this year. She finished the conference season with the fourth best scoring average as she tallied 15.7 points per SLC game. Wilson also ranked in the top ten in conference play in rebounds per game with 7.9 rebounds.
"The addition of Micaela has raised our level exponentially," said head coach
Aqua Franklin. "She has overcome a lot of obstacles to get to this point. No one has the experience that she has coming from a Big 12 program. Micaela has a tremendous work ethic, and I am glad that it has paid off by being named one of the top five players in the Southland Conference."
