Cards Rally to Defeat Southeastern Louisiana

BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University started off slow but got consecutive wins from freshman Ana Jolic and junior Natalia Garcia Molina to grab the lead and never look back defeating Southeastern Louisiana, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at the Thompson Family Tennis Center. The win moves LU to 5-3 on the season, and 2-1 in Southland Conference play.

The Lions jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after picking up wins on courts 1 and 2 in doubles play. LU rallied immediately when the match swung to singles. Starting with the lower third of the order, LU picked up quick straight-set decisions from Jolic on court No. 5 followed by Molina at the fourth spot. They combined to record two shutout sets as LU snagged a one-point lead.

After freshman Alba Perez defeated Southeastern's Teodora Mitrovic, 6-3, 6-1, the Cardinals were knocking on the door of another team win. Big Red didn't have to wait long to put the match away as freshman Elena Rodriguez slammed the door shut at No. 2 singles. She defeated the Lions' Polina Sleptsova, 6-1, 6-4, for the victory.

SLU was able to score one final point with a win at No. 1 singles before the Cardinals closed out the match with a three-set victory from freshman Emmeline Polevoi at No. 6 singles.

The Cardinals return to action Tuesday when they host McNeese at 2 p.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center. The match was originally scheduled to be played Friday before weather forced it to be moved.
