Volleyball Hosts Sam Houston in Rescheduled Match

| By:
BEAUMONT, Texas – A Southland Conference volleyball match being played on a Sunday during the spring is a rarity in collegiate athletics, but that has become common place during this time of COVID – and a very rare winter storm which hit Southeast Texas last month. That storm forced the match between Sam Houston and LU to be pushed back until Sunday.

The Cardinals (1-9/1-4 SLC) will look to get back in the win column when they step on the court to host Sam Houston. Big Red has split its last two decisions – with the win being a 3-0 victory at home over Northwestern State – which was the first win for head coach Jordan Lay as LU's head coach.

LU enters the week currently 12th in the Southland standings but is tightly bunched with several other teams fighting for position in the conference tournament beginning later this month. Big Red currently sits within two games of four other teams.

Sunday's opponent – Sam Houston – is currently alone in second place by a game in the standings. The Bearkats (5-1/5-1 SLC) are a half game up on Houston Baptist trailing only Stephen F. Austin. SHSU has been cruising since a season-opening loss at Central Arkansas. The Bearkats come to Beaumont having won five straight, but they have faced their fair share of close calls. Over the course of their past three wins, SHSU has been pushed the full five twice with the other match being decided in four sets.

Sunday's contest is slated to begin at 3 p.m. from the Montagne Center. Fans are expected to continue to follow social distancing guidelines and still wear masks while attending all LU home events.

Sunday's game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
