Cardinals Fall to Nationally Ranked Bearkats

BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University trailed No. 7 Sam Houston by only seven at the end of the first quarter, but the Bearkats rattled off 31 unanswered points in the second to defeat LU, 62-7, Saturday evening at Provost Humphrey Stadium.

The Cardinals (1-3/1-3 SLC) finished the night with 179 yards of offense, including 153 through the air. Big Red was hurt by turnovers Saturday ending the day with two interceptions and two fumbles.

Senior Austin Scott went the majority of the game behind center completing 10-of-19 passes for 123 yards and one score. Freshman Jaylon Jackson led the Cardinals' ground attack with six rushes for 40 yards. He also hauled in a team-best three passes for 66 yards and a touchdown.

The Bearkats recorded 504 of total offense, and did the majority of their damage through the air, completing 21-of-33 passes for 350 yards and two scores.

LU's defense continues to do a go job and stealing possessions away from its opponents. The Cardinals picked off two passes and also forced five fumbles (recovering two). LU's defense was led by eight tackles from Anthony Ruffin and Dallas Martin. Ruffin recorded one of the team's two interceptions. Freshman Wyatt Rohmer recorded five tackles – two for losses, forced two fumbles and recovered a fumble. Senior Brandon Arnold recorded three stops including two sacks. The Cardinals' other pick came from senior Kyron Norwood.

The two teams went into the second quarter with Sam Houston protecting a 7-0 lead. Unfortunately, the Bearkats tacked on their second score just eight seconds into the second quarter. The Jequez Ezzard 35-yard reception sparked a 31-point run by the Bearkats to take a commanding lead.

The Cardinals got on the scoreboard early in the fourth quarter when Scott hit Jackson down the near sideline for 42 yards. It is the longest reception of Jackson's young career.  SHSU tacked on one final score late in the game.

The Cardinals return to action Saturday, Mar. 27th, when they host Northwestern State for Senior Day. The regular-season home finale is slated to kick off at 3 p.m. from Provost Humphrey Stadium.
