BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's soccer program tallied a huge win on Friday night as they defeated Northwestern State, 2-0, on a chilly evening at the LU Soccer Complex.
"It feels great," said head coach
Steve Holeman. "This was a really huge win for this team and program and for the seniors that have represented this program so well. We knew this was a big game for us and Northwestern State. They are very good and make it difficult to get many opportunities. Last Friday when we played Nicholls, I said that we needed to be more efficient in front of the net. They limited our chances but finished on the chances we got."
The contest turned out to be a highly defensive battle, but it was the Cardinals that tallied goals at the 82
nd minute and the 85
th minute that gave them the 2-0 win over the Demons. Junior
Christine Kitaru notched the first goal for the Big Red and was assisted by redshirt senior
Esther Okoronkwo. Junior
Anessa Byerman notched her first goal of the season after being assisted by Kitaru and Okoronkwo.
Lamar outshot Northwestern State, 10-7, with seven of the Cardinal shots coming on goal. The reigning SLC Goalie of the week
Nicole Panis recorded four saves on the evening and helped propel the Cardinals to the win. In the corner kick battle, Lamar lead with four compared to two corners for the Demons.
