Cardinals Host Nationally Ranked Bearkats

| By:
BEAUMONT, Texas – Fresh off their come-from-behind overtime victory at rival McNeese, the Lamar University Cardinals will look to make it two wins in a row when they step on the field Saturday to host No. 7 Sam Houston. Saturday's game is slated for a 6 p.m. kick off at Provost Umphrey Stadium.

The Cardinals (1-2/1-2 Southland) are coming off an impressive overtime win at McNeese last week that saw the team rally from an early 13-3 deficit – a game in which the Cowboys scored on the game's opening play. The victory also served as head coach Blane Morgan's first career win.

Things don't get any easier for the Red and White as they now turn their attention to the Southland co-leaders, Sam Houston. The Bearkats are currently tied with UIW atop the league standings with a 2-0 record. SHSU is coming off a statement last week after dismantling top-10 Nicholls, 71-17, in Huntsville.

Sam Houston enters the week leading the league in scoring and total offense, and currently rank as the SLC leaders in rush defense.

Big Red has continued to show increased improvement each week of the season. After surrendering 13 points in the first quarter at McNeese, the Cardinals dug in and allowed just seven points in the final 45 minutes of regulation. The Cowboys only other score came on their possession overtime.

The Cardinals trail the all-time series against Sam Houston, 11-20 (.355), a mark that includes a 67-11 (.389) record in Beaumont. The Cardinals enter Saturday's contest having won consecutive games in the series and three of the past five meetings. The last time the two teams met in Beaumont (2018), the Cardinals recorded a 41-23 victory. Oddly, the last Cardinal win prior to last Saturday's victory at McNeese was also an overtime contest, at Sam Houston.

Saturday's game is slated to kick off at 6 p.m. from Provost Umphrey Stadium. It will be broadcast live on Newstalk 560 KLVI and streamed live on ESPN+.
