BEAUMONT, Texas -- The Lamar University women's volleyball team (1-12, 1-7 Southland) will take to the court Tuesday evening when they welcome McNeese (4-4, 4-4 SLC) to the Montagne Center.
Â
The Cardinals are coming off a very tough loss at Nicholls Saturday, dropping the last two sets to fall, 3-2. LU enters the match looking to put a stop to a four-match slide, with their last victory coming against Northwestern State (Feb. 23); however, their last two matches have gone the distance with Big Red being on the unfortunate side of back-to-back 3-2 decisions.
Â
Kaitlyn Gil continues to be the standout Cardinal in offensive play and boasts an impressive 3.20 points per set. Gil's 124 kills on the season places her eighth in the Southland Conference rankings. She is also ranked eighth in the league in points (131).
Â
McNeese comes to Beaumont with a recent two-match win streak; which has seen them sweep three set victories against New Orleans and Northwestern State. The Cowgirls duo of Caitlin Sharrock and Regan Stiawalt pose the biggest threat offensively. Sharrock leads the conference on service aces and Stiawalt ranks fifth in kills with a 3.38 average kills per set on the season.
Â
The two programs have a rich history of competing against each other and Tuesday's match will be the 76th instalment of the Battle of the Border. The Cardinals recorded a 3-0 sweep last time around in 2019 and will look to add to their impressive home record against the Cowgirls which sees them command a 26-9 record.
Â
Following Tuesday's match, the Cardinals will play their final home contest on Mar. 20 when they host Houston Baptist (7-7, 6-2 SLC), play is scheduled to begin at 11 AM.
