Baseball's Win Streak Ends at Four

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Lamar University watched its four-game win streak come to an end Wednesday when Tarleton State used a six-run seventh inning to rally past the Cardinals, 10-6. The setback is LU's first loss of the season (4-1).

The Cardinals exploded for six runs on eight hits but were hurt by four errors on the night. LU surrendered 10 runs, but seven were unearned.

Trevin Michael got the start and pitched strong five strong innings allowing just two runs – one earned – on six hits. He struck out five Texans without surrendering a walk. Braxton Douthit pitched a third of inning and took the loss after being the unfortunate recipient of four unearned runs.

The Cardinals knocked the Texans' starter – Landon Cody – out after just 2.1 innings. He gave up five runs on five hits. The Texans used five pitchers Wednesday with Luke Baley getting the win after pitching two scoreless.

The Cardinals got out to a quick start with a six-run third to take the first lead of the game. After loading the bases, Big Red got a sac fly from Chase Kemp to drive in Logan LeJeune for the first run of the game. After that the Red and White got an RBI single from Anthony Quirion to take a 2-0 advantage.

Following a pitching change, LU scored an unearned run on a passed ball, and then Matt McDonald closed out the scoring with a sacrifice fly. The Cardinals then turned the game over to its pitching staff and defense, but the that's when Tarleton began to chip away at the lead.

The Texans scratched across single runs in the fourth and fifth, before adding two in the sixth. Despite the four unanswered runs, Big Red took a two-run lead into the seventh, but Tarleton struck for its own six-run inning to claim its first lead of the game – and just second time all season that LU has trailed.

For a defense that went through the first four games without an error, the Cardinals were hurt by miscues in the seventh. After a strikeout, the Texans leadoff hitter reached on a passed ball. After the batter lined out, Cody Vannoy reached on a catcher's interference. The Texans followed with three consecutive singles and then took advantage of a two-out error. Tarleton tacked on a two-run double before LU managed to put a stop the inning.

The Cardinals had baserunners in each of the last two innings but were unable to bring them around.

Six different Cardinals recorded hits with junior Avery George continuing his hot start with another multi-hit game. Both he and Kelby Weyler went 2-for-5 with a run scored.

Due to expected rain in the Arlington area Sunday, the series against UT Arlington has been moved from a Friday start to Thursday. The series will get under way Thursday with first pitch slated for 6:30 p.m. from Clay Gould field.
