Cardinals Fall on Day Two of Lone Star State Invitational

WACO, Texas – The Lamar University softball program dropped two contests in Waco, game one to UConn and game two to No. 23/21 Baylor, on day two of the Lone Star State Invitational.

Game 1 – UConn 7, Lamar 0

The opening inning of day two began with three up, and three down for both programs before the Huskies were able to bring in two runs in the second to take the lead. Sophomore Felixia Hinojosa was able to record a Big Red hit in the third, but the Cards fell short off notching a run.

UConn extended their lead in the third to 4-0 on a two-run home run to left field and went onto extended their lead with some insurance runs in the seventh to seal the 7-0 win over the Cardinals. Hinojosa and senior Hannah Carpenter recorded the lone hits for Lamar in the loss.

Game 2 – No. 23/21 Baylor 10, Lamar 0

The Cardinals were able to notch two hits but did not get anyone home in the first inning of game two. The Bears got right to work early with a double to left field that scored the first runs of the game to make it 2-0 in favor of Baylor.

The second inning showed some light for the Cards, but they could not find home again before the Bears' bats came on fire in the bottom of the frame. Baylor went onto score eight runs on six hits in the second to claim a 10-0 lead over Lamar and would hold onto the lead for the remainder of the contest. The Cards tried to get the bats hot, but stellar pitching for the Bears kept the Cardinals at bay as Baylor came away with a 10-0 win in five innings.

UP NEXT: The Cardinals will head to San Marcos for the final day of the Lone Star State Invitational for a matchup with Texas State. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. at the Bobcat Softball Stadium.
