Soccer Captures Win over Islanders

BEAUMONT, Texas – After battling for 45 minutes, the Lamar University women's soccer program rattled off three goals in the second half to capture a 3-0 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday night.

"We have not been able to play in two weeks and we have been training really well," said head coach Steve Holeman. "It was nice to come out, especially in the second half. We had to make some tactical adjustments at halftime. Corpus Christi did a good job of keeping us off the scoreboard and they created a lot of really good opportunities in the first half. I thought it was a really good second half for us and move forward with that performance."

After 45 minutes of play at LU Soccer Complex, the Cardinals and the Islanders were knotted at 0-0. Redshirt senior Esther Okoronkwo tallied six shots in the first half alone to lead the Cardinals in shots. Lamar finished the night outshooting the Islanders, 23-16, including 11 shots on goals to A&MCC's eight. The Islanders had a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks. Texas A&M – Corpus Christi was whistled just one more time than Lamar as the Big Red committed just nine fouls to AMCC's 10.

The first half came to an end with the score knotted at 0-0. Lamar ended the scoring drought as 2021 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List selection – Esther Okoronkwo – tallied her third goal of the season on a feed from freshman Arely Alaniz. Big Red did not let up the offensive pressure as junior Christine Kitaru recorded her first goal as a Cardinal on a feed from Okoronkwo. Adding another goal to keep the game out of reach, Alaniz tallied her second assist of the night as she fed the Nederland native senior Madison Ledet for Ledet's first goal of the season.

UP NEXT: The Cardinals will look to turn around quickly as they welcome Houston Baptist to the LU Soccer Complex on Sunday, February 28th with a 1 p.m. kick off.
