Women's Hoops Travels to Huntsville for Rematch

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's basketball program is looking to extend their win streak when they travel to Huntsville, Texas for a rematch with the Bearkats of Sam Houston. Tipoff is slated for 6:00 p.m. CT inside the Bernard Johnson Coliseum.
The Cardinals are led by redshirt junior Micaela Wilson who averages 11.9 points a game and helps lead a Cardinal defense with 5.7 rebounds a game. Freshman Bebe Galloway as exploded in her first year as she leads the Cardinals' defense with 5.9 rebounds a game and puts up 6.4 points offensively. Freshman Sabria Dean leads Lamar in minutes played where she averages 26.1 a game.
The Bearkats are led by Amber Leggett who averages 20.3 points a game and knocks down 50 percent of her shots from the field. Leading the Sam Houston defense is also Leggett who brings down 7.1 boards a game. Madelyn Batista helps the Bearkat defense out as she pulls down 6.4 rebounds a game.
 
LAST TIME WE PLAYED
  • The Lamar University women's basketball program captured the season sweep over Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, 68-57, in Corpus Christi on Saturday afternoon.
  • The first quarter saw the Islanders come out firing on all cylinders. As they took an early 13-6 lead over the Cards going into the second. A&M-Corpus Christi shot 46 percent in the first alone and held LU to just 25 percent from the field. Lamar went up 6-2 early, but the Islander offense and defense went to work as they rattled off 11 points to take the lead going into the second quarter.
  • The second quarter saw the Big Red offense come to life as they were led by freshman Sabria Dean got to work and tallied 10 points in the second including a three-pointer near the buzzer to tie the game at 33 all going into the halftime break. The Cardinal defense let the Islanders shoot 50 percent in the second frame, but the Big Red offense exploded, shooting 69 percent from the field in the second.
  • The Cardinals took the lead in the third and did not look back as they captured the win over the Islanders with stout defense in the fourth. Limiting AMCC to 40 percent shooting, the Cardinals shot 46 percent from the field and did not miss a shot at the free-throw in the fourth. Lamar captured the victory over the Islanders, 68-57, to sweep the season series. 
SERIES HISTORY
  • This marks the 68th meeting between the programs with the Cardinals holding the series advantage over the Bearkats, 37-29.
  • The last time out, Sam Houston captured the first contest of the 2020-21 season between the programs in an overtime thriller, 83-80, in Beaumont.
