Softball Splits Day Two at Scrap Yard Blizzard Challenge

CONROE, Texas – The Lamar University softball program split day two of the Scrap Yard Blizzard Challenge in Conroe, Texas as they were defeated, 8-0, by North Texas, but Big Red was able to bounce back and capture the win in game two against Tarleton State, 4-1.

GAME 1 – North Texas 8, Lamar 0 (5 Inn.)

North Texas picked up right where they left off as they tallied the first run of the game in the top of the first on a double. The Cards went on to get two on base in the bottom of the frame but could not get anything going. Lamar kept the hot bats of the Mean Green at bay in the second, but in the third, North Texas went on to tally five runs on five hits.

The Mean Green went on to add to their lead in the top of the fourth that would give them a 8-0 lead going into the fifth. The Cards would get one on base, but batting woes continued to hurt the Big Red as North Texas went onto capture the five-inning victory over the Cards, 8-0.

GAME 2 – Lamar 4, Tarleton State 1

The Cardinals bounced back in high fashion has senior Shelby Mixon allowed just one run over six innings of work in game two of the day against Tarleton State. Junior Aleka Xayaseng started the scoring for the big Red in the top of the first as she was able to tag home when the third  baseman for the Texans got threw the batter out instead of her.

The contest went onto be more of a back and forth affair before senior Hannah Carpenter gave the Cardinals some breathing room with a home run to left field that was just barely fair. The home run brought in freshman Sydnee Adams to extend the Cardinal lead to 4-0 going into the sixth. The Texans were able to get something going in the bottom of the sixth on a fielder's choice that brought in their first run of the afternoon.

Going into the seventh, the momentum was all Lamar. The Cardinals were able to keep the Tarleton State bats off the scoreboard in the seventh as sophomore Nicolette Ramirez was able to get the groundout at second to end the game. The Cardinals captured the victory over the Texans, 4-1, at the Scrap Yard Sports Complex.

UP NEXT:  The Cardinals will now turn their attention when they host nationally ranked Oklahoma State at the LU Softball Complex on Monday, February 22nd. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. with game two set to begin at 6:00 p.m. CT.
