Cards Suffer Heartbreaking Loss

BEAUMONT, Texas – Stetson's Rob Perry buried a baseline jumper with six seconds remaining to send Lamar University home with a heartbreaking 60-59 loss Friday evening at the Montagne Center. The loss drops LU to 1-3 (.250) on the season.

The Hatters' basket gave them final lead in a contest that saw Big Red lead for more than 24 minutes. The Cardinals finished the night shooting 23-of-61 (.377) from the field, and 8-of-24 (.333) from three-point range.

Stetson grabbed a slight advantage on the glass, 40-38, but both teams pulled down 13 offensive boards.

Both squads did a solid job of hanging onto the basketball. The Cardinals turned the ball over just seven times while forcing Stetson into 10 miscues, but both teams limited the damage from their mistakes.

The difference in the game came on the defensive side of floor LU. In the opening 20 minutes, the Cardinals held Stetson to a mere six field goals (6-of-28/.231), of which only two were three-pointers. The Cardinals responded by taking control in the first building a double-digit advantage. The lead grew to as many as 13 points following a Davion Buster three-ball with 4:14 remaining in the half. The Hatters managed to trim the lead down to nine going into the locker room following two Perry free throws with three seconds remaining in the half.

The second half was a different story as the visitors hit five of their first six attempts – including an and-one – to pull back even with 14:12 remaining. The game was a back-n-forth contest after that, but Stetson never cooled off shooting 16-of-31 (.516) from the field in the final 20 minutes (finishing the game 22-of-57/.386). The Cardinals also improved their shooting in second stanza as well converting 12-of-28 (.429) attempts but it wasn't enough to prevent the comeback.

The Cardinals were led by 15 points from junior Jordyn Adams and 11 from senior Davion Buster. Senior C.J. Roberts and sophomore Kasen Harrison each finished the game with eight points, while Harrison and Adams pulled down a team-high four rebounds.

The Cardinals will be back in action Sunday when they travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., to face Southern Mississippi. The game against the Golden Eagles will tip off at 2 p.m.
