Vaqueros Escape Beaumont With a Win

BEAUMONT, Texas – Back into the McDonald Gym from their road trips, the Lamar University Volleyball team played host to UT Rio Grande Valley for their opening match of their Western Athletic Conference season ­– a new era for the Cardinals in the McDonald Gym. LU lost 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-14) to UTRGV. LU recorded 22 Kills on the day, but were stung by 19 errors, leaving them with an .039 attack percentage. UTRGV recorded 40 kills and hit .375 for the match.

Individually, Amber Johnson led the Cardinals with seven kills. Kaitlyn Gil recorded five and Emily Surin added four, respectively. Gil, Sam Swayze, and London Hatch all recorded an ace each within the match. While Amber Johnson returned to lead the Cardinals defense with two blocks. Surin and Tytiana Johnson also added a block to the final stats. London Hatch and Hannah Waters both provided 11 assists in the contest. Swayze led Big Red in digs with 14. LU recorded 31 Digs in total compared to just 27 from UTRGV.

Next up for LU will be a trip across to Stephenville, Texas, where they will face Tarleton State. This match will be played at Wisdom Gym at 6 p.m. A livestream displaying the game will be available on ESPN+.
