Kitaru Guides LU to WAC Win

| By:
Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Senior Christine Kitaru netted two goals to lead Lamar University to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory at Sam Houston Friday evening. The victory not only helps LU keep pace with the league leaders (7-6-1/4-1-1 WAC), but was also the Cards first win in Huntsville in 13 years.

Big Red was on the attack early and often to sweep the season series against Sam Houston, with identical 2-1 scores. LU outshot its host, 13-6, including a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Cardinals managed 10 corner kicks to only three for Sam Houston.

The more aggressive team, the Cardinals were whistled 13 times (with three offsides) to 11 fouls against SHSU.

"This was a big win tonight in a place that has been very tough for us to play historically," said LU head coach Steve Holeman. "Our players understood the history of this series, how tough it is here and what happened last spring. Obviously, tonight was big for the conference standings as well. It is very tough to play a team twice in the same season. This was special because there were so many different things riding on it.

"Christine scored a ridiculous goal in the second half. She drilled a ball in the far corner upper 90, and we did a good job of managing the game in the end," added Holeman.

After the Bearkats took the opening lead of the game in the 29th minute, LU found the equalizer before halftime. Kitaru took a pass from Isela Ramirez and buried the ball in the back of the net in the 38th minute. The two teams went into the intermission deadlocked at one.

The Cardinals outshot their hosts, 11-3, including a 9-3 advantage on goal despite the tie score in the first 45 minutes.

The score remained unchanged for the next 41 minutes. As the clock moved into the 84th minute Kitaru went back on the attack. She netted her second goal of the night – an unassisted score. The Bearkats were unable to answer in the closing moments of the game.

LU will be in Nacogdoches Sunday for the rematch with Stephen F. Austin. The game against the Ladyjacks will begin at 1 p.m.
