BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's basketball program will travel to San Antonio, Texas on Wednesday evening for a Southland Conference matchup against the UIW Cardinals. Tip off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. (CT) and will be streamed by UIW Athletics.
The Cardinals (9-17, 5-12 Southland) come into the matchup following a home loss to Texas A&M – Corpus Christi on Saturday afternoon, 64-56. The Cards are led on offense by sophomore
Angel Hastings who averages 13.0 points per game, while defensively, senior
Briana Laidler leads Lamar with 8.0 blocks per game and 1.5 blocks per game.
The "Other" Cardinals (13-12 9-7 Southland) are coming off a take down of Stephen F. Austin, 60-52, on Saturday afternoon. UIW is led by senior Imani Robinson who averages 14.1 points. Defensively for the "Other" Cardinals, they are led by Kara Speer, who pulls down an average of 5.1 rebounds per game.
This will mark the 12
th meeting between the programs on the hardwood as the Cardinals lead the series 10-1 over Incarnate Word. Last time out, the "Other" Cardinals captured their first win over Lamar.
RECAPPING OUR LAST GAME
- A spirited performance was not enough for the Lamar University women's basketball team as they fell to Texas A&M - Corpus Christi on Saturday afternoon, 64-56, at the Montagne Center.
- The second quarter saw the Islanders forge ahead and take a five-point lead at the halftime mark. The Cardinals managed a fifty percent field goal percentage, recording five out of a possible 10 attempts. Angel Hastings etched nine points for the Cardinals to ensure they remained in touching distance of the Islanders.
- A resilient display in the fourth quarter saw the rejuvenated Cardinals pull it back point by point, trailing at a time by 10 points. The Cardinals rallied to lead 51-50 at 5:34 left to play. The Cardinals fightback was thanks in part to duo, Hastings and Amber Vidal who both broke into double figures during the second half of the match. However, the Islanders weathered Big Reds storm on the game to retake the lead and control the last few minutes of the match up.

- The Cardinals fall to 8-10 overall after falling to UIW, 67-48, on Wednesday night in the Montagne Center.
- Lamar was led by junior center Rikiah Cowart, who finished the night with 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting. She grabbed six rebounds in the process. Senior Briana Laidler added eight points with three rebounds in the contest.
- Freshman Kayla Mitchell got her first start since Dec. 2 against LeTourneau. Mitchell finished the night with four points and three assists. Sophomore Umaja Collins saw action as she went on the finish the night with two blocks and two rebounds.
