Atwood Nabs SLC Player of the Week Honor

BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University senior T.J. Atwood earns Southland Conference Player of the Week announced league officials Monday afternoon. It is the first time this season Atwood has received the honor, and the third time a Cardinal has been recognized. Teammates Davion Buster and Avery Sullivan were awarded the honor earlier this season.
 
Atwood averaged 21.0 points and five rebounds per game in the Cardinals' two victories last week. He helped the team to two big conference wins at Sam Houston State and against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The wins extend the Big Red's win streak to three games.
 
On Wednesday, the Cardinals traveled to Sam Houston State to take on the Bearkats. Atwood helped the Cardinals to a 77-65 victory. He led the team in scoring with 20 points on an impressive 8-of-12 (.667) from the field. He also grabbed five boards and had two assists on the night.
 
Atwood and company came back home to face A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday. Atwood helped his team to a 79-62 win over the Islanders. In that game, he led the team in scoring with 22 points, and shot 14-of-15 (.933) from the charity stripe. He also recorded five rebounds and three assists versus the Islanders.
 
With this week's performance, Atwood is now averaging 16.2 points per game on the season, while shooting .511 from the field. In addition to his scoring, the Beaumont native also averages 6.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.4 steals per contest.
 
The Cardinals will look to continue their win streak when they host Incarnate Word on Wednesday 26. Tipoff against UIW is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Montagne Center.
