SAN MARCOS, Texas – Fourteen walks. 14 strikeouts. 16 hits. 15 runs. Sunday's series finale between Lamar University baseball and Texas State University saw a little bit of everything, lasting three hours and 10 minutes with 11 pitchers taking the mound. In the end, Texas State emerged with an 8-7 win over Lamar.
Â
Anthony Quirion got the Cards on the board early, slamming a 2-1 pitch over the left field wall that brought him and
Cole Girouard (five-pitch walk) home safely. That lead didn't last long though; three walks, two wild pitches, and four hits brought home six Bobcats. After one inning Texas State led 6-2.
Â
The Cards responded with alacrity in the top of the second.
Reese Durand led off with a single and reached second on a single by
Kelby Weyler, which stretched Weyler's hit streak to seven games. Walks of
Rhett McCall and
Avery George brought Durand home, and a sac fly from Girouard scored Weyler. A double by Quirion brought McCall home, and
JC Correa brought home George on a fielder's choice before a 4-3 grounder stranded Correa at first. The game was tied at 6 runs apiece heading into the bottom of the second.
Â
A lead-off double and a walk ended
Austin Faith's day in the second, and he was relieved by
Dylan Johnson, who went four innings. A sac fly with no outs and a two-out single scored the inherited runners, but Johnson struck out the final batter of the inning to hold Texas State to two runs. After two innings, Texas State led 8-6.
Â
After the deluge of offense in the first and second innings, things calmed down considerably over the next three with LU's Johnson and Texas State reliever Cameron Bush throwing three scoreless frames apiece. Each reliever allowed just one hit in that time. Through five innings Texas State led 8-6.
Â
New pitchers took over for Texas State and Lamar in the sixth, and the Bobcats' Tony Robie and LU's
Douglas Palmer held the offense in check once again. Through six innings Texas State led 8-6.
Â
Lamar chipped away at the Texas State lead in the seventh. Quirion singled with one out and reached third on a Correa double to right, and a walk of Kemp loaded the bases with just one out. An RBI grounder to first brought Quirion home, but a 6-3 grounder stranded Correa and Kemp in scoring position.
John Altman relieved Palmer and sat the Bobcats down in order, striking out two. Through seven Texas State led by one run, 8-7.
Â
In the eighth George singled with two outs but a bad luck liner from Girouard went straight into the Texas State first baseman's glove, and
Braydon Credeur took over for Altman. A lead-off, pinch hit double reached third on a sac bunt, but Credeur held him there, getting a strikeout with runners on the corners. Through eight, Texas State led by one, 8-7.
Â
Quirion finished the day a triple short of the cycle on a popup to center field, and Correa came just 10 feet short of a game-tying homer. Kemp worked back from an 0-2 count to a full count, but a popup ended the day. Despite being kept off the board the final six innings, Texas State narrowly held on, winning 8-7 over Lamar.

The Cardinals return to action on Tuesday with UTSA at home. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
