BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's basketball program will welcome Texas A&M – Corpus Christi to the Montagne Center on Saturday afternoon in a Southland Conference matchup. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (CT) and will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
The Cardinals (9-16, 5-11 Southland) are coming off a home loss to Sam Houston State on Wednesday night, 75-68. Lamar is led by sophomore
Angel Hastings, who averages 12.9 points per game and is coming off three consecutive double-digit scoring performances. Senior
Briana Laidler leads the Lamar defense with an average of 8.0 rebounds and 1.44 blocks per game.
The Islanders are coming off a nail biter to Southeastern Louisiana, 49-48, on Wednesday night in Corpus Christi. Texas A&M – Corpus Christi is led by senior Alexes Bryant who averages 13.0 points per game and tallies 6.4 rebounds per game while shooting 50 percent from the field.
This will mark the 27
th meeting between the programs on the hardwood as the Cardinals lead the series 17-10 over the Colonels while the Islanders captured the previous season meeting, 49-39, over Lamar.
RECAPPING OUR LAST GAME
- The Lamar University women's basketball program fell on Wednesday in a Southland contest with Sam Houston State, 75-68, in the Montagne Center.
- Vidal got back into her groove in the third quarter as she tallied eight points in the quarter. She finished the third going 4-for-7 from the field. Bench play was dominated by the Cardinals in the third. Lamar tacked on eight points off the bench compared to just three for Sam Houston State.
- The Cardinals had four players finish in double-digit scoring. This marks the first time since Nov. 11, 2019 that the Cards achieved the feat. Junior Jadyn Pimentel tallied 10 points in the loss but tacked on seven steals and five assists to her performance.
LAST TIME WE MET
- The Cardinals were not able to get past the A&M-Corpus Christi defensive pressure in the second half as they fell to the Islanders, 49-39, on Saturday afternoon at the American Bank Center.
- Hastings finished with a team-high 14 points to go a long with three steals and a rebound. Redshirt Senior Amber Vidal finished the afternoon with nine points and six rebounds.
- The fourth quarter found the Cardinals fighting back, but it was not enough as the Islanders took the game 49-39. The Cardinals fall to 8-9 overall while slipping to 4-4 in the Southland.
