BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University jumped out to a quick start Sunday afternoon and never looked back cruising to a 6-1 victory over UL Monroe at the Thompson Family Tennis Center. The victory was the third straight for LU who is now a match over .500 (3-2) on the season.
The Cardinals picked up their first two points of the match with one victory. UL Monroe only had five available players forcing them to forfeit matches on courts three (doubles) and six (singles). The Warhawks picked up a win on court two, but seniors
Jasmin Buchta and
Sanja Jolic were able to match the effort with a 6-3 win on court No. 1 for the point.
The Cardinals opened singles with a 2-0 lead after the forfeited match on court six.
Sophomore
Laura Sola Grau made it 3-0 with her impressive straight sets victory at No. 5 singles. Sola Grau steamrolled ULM's Jelena Lopicic, 6-0, 6-1. With Sola Grau's victory in books, the Cardinals needed just one win on the final four courts to seal the victory.
The Red and White didn't have to wait long for the clincher. It came in the form of junior
Natalia Garcia Molina. She recorded a straight-sets decision over Jelena Pereira, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4. Following Garcia Molina's victory, LU picked up wins at Nos. 2 and 3 singles. The Warhawks got their lone victory on court No. 1.
The Cardinals will be back in action Friday, Feb. 14 when they host Oral Roberts. The match against ORU will begin at 2 p.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
