Big Red Prepares for Nicholls
Â
BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University looks to get back in the win column Wednesday when they travel to Thibodaux, La., to take on Nicholls. Winners in three of their past five games, the Cardinals are coming off a disappointing setback at Abilene Christian over the weekend.
Â
The Cardinals (12-12/6-7 SLC) enter the midweek contest in a two-way tie for eighth in the Southland Conference with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. LU sits just a game back of fifth place and a 1.5 games up on the University of the Incarnate Word.
Â
The game against the Colonels is key for both teams. The Cardinals enter the contest trying to secure one of the top eight spots for the Southland tournament next month in Katy, while Nicholls still has an outside shot at the conference regular season title but they need some help.
Â
Nicholls is 15-9 (.625) overall and sits alone in second place with a 9-4 (.692) conference mark. The Colonels are currently a half game up on Abilene Christian, but trail league-leading Stephen F. Austin by three games with six to play.
Â
The first time LU and Nicholls met this season, the Colonels escaped Beaumont with a nine-point victory. That game saw Nicholls gain some separation after taking advantage of 23 LU turnovers. Nicholls scored 26 points off the Cardinal mistakes to pick up the victory.
Â
The Cardinals own a 27-12 (.692) all-time record against Nicholls – a mark that includes Nicholls' victory in the Montagne Center earlier this season. Despite that loss, the Cardinals have won five of the previous six meetings in the series. The Cardinals have had some luck against Nicholls in Thibodaux posting a 9-7 (.563) record in those games.
Â
Wednesday's game will tip off at 7 p.m. from Stopher Gym in Thibodaux. It will be broadcast live on Newstalk 560 KLVI.
