DALLAS, Texas – The Lamar University women's tennis team picked up their first victory of the season with an impressive 6-1 decision at Dallas Baptist University Sunday afternoon. The victory moves LU to 1-2 (.333) on the season.
All five of LU's singles victories came in straight sets.
"I thought we came out much stronger today, than in our match yesterday," said LU head coach
David Wong. "We had to adjust our lineup again today due to injuries and I thought our team stepped up across the board."
DBU picked up the first victory of the day with a 6-2 decision at No. 1 doubles, but the Cardinals responded with victories on courts 2 and 3 to take the point. With an early lead, Big Red held that momentum in singles play winning five of the first six sets. Senior
Bianca Vitale was able to add to the Cardinals lead with her win at No. 2 singles. Vitale recorded a quick 6-1, 6-2, decision over the Patriots Leslie Tate.
Junior
Natalia Garcia Molina pushed the Cardinals lead to three after her victory over Adriana Carpenter on court No. 4. Garcia Molina posted a 6-3 victory in the first set, a victory that seemed to knock the wind out of her opponent. Garcia Molina closed out her match with a 6-0 victory in the second set.
With the Cardinals up 3-0, the Red and White needed only one more win for the overall team victory. The Cardinals wasted little time to wrap up the match by taking victories on courts 3, 1, 5 before DBU was able to dent the scoreboard. The Patriots' lone point came on court six after the match had already been decided.
The Cardinals return to action Saturday when they return home to host UT Rio Grande Valley. The match against the Vaqueros will begin at 1 p.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
