Cardinals Set to Host SFA on Reunion Weekend

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's basketball program will look to get back in the win column when they welcome Stephen F. Austin to the Montagne Center on Saturday for Reunion Weekend. Tip off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (CT) and will be broadcasted on ESPN3.

Lamar will be hosting their annual Reunion Weekend. The Cardinals are proud to welcome back former Cardinal standouts Sandra Duhon and Carolyn Rodgers for their athletic accomplishments as well as being the first African-American student-athletes in program history.

The contest will also future the Ladyjacks and Lamar participating in Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer, in which the programs are supporting kids who are battling cancer in Texas.

The Cardinals (8-10, 4-5 Southland) suffered their third home loss to Incarnate Word, 67-48, on Jan. 22, and were led by junior Rikiah Cowart who finished the night with 10 points and six rebounds.

Stephen F. Austin (14-3, 7-1 Southland) is coming into the contest following a 89-40 rout of Northwestern State on Wednesday night. The Ladyjacks are led offensively by sophomore Stephanie Visscher who averages 14.6 points per game, while sophomore Aiyana Johnson leads the defense with 8.2 rebounds per game.

This will mark the 73rd meeting between the programs on the hardwood as the Ladyjacks lead the series 56-17 over the Cardinals. The lone conference loss from the 2018-19 season came at the hands of Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, Texas.

RECAPPING OUR LAST GAME
  • The Cardinals fall to 8-10 overall after falling to UIW, 67-48, on Wednesday night in the Montagne Center. 
  • Lamar was led by junior center Rikiah Cowart, who finished the night with 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting. She grabbed six rebounds in the process. Senior Briana Laidler added eight points with three rebounds in the contest.
  • Freshman Kayla Mitchell got her first start since Dec. 2 against LeTourneau. Mitchell finished the night with four points and three assists. Sophomore Umaja Collins saw action as she went on the finish the night with two blocks and two rebounds.
LAST TIME WE MET
  • The Lamar University women's basketball team clinched a share of the Southland Conference regular season title on Saturday afternoon as they defeated Stephen F. Austin, 62-46, at the Montagne Center.
  • The win for the Cards was its 41st straight at the Montagne Center. LU can claim the outright SLC Title next Saturday with a victory or loss by SFA next week.
  • With the win, LU improves to 23-5 on the season and 16-1 in SLC play, while SFA falls to 23-5 and 14-2 in SLC play. Lamar forced the Ladyjacks into 29 turnovers in the contest. Lamar shot 42 percent from the floor in the win and recorded 19 steals. LU scored 31 points off SFA turnovers.
