Cards Fall to Demons in OT

Box Score NATCHITOCHES, La. – Northwestern State nets a goal seven minutes into overtime to defeat Lamar University, 2-1, Friday night in Natchitoches. The heartbreaking loss drops LU to 4-6 on the season and 1-1 in Southland Conference play.
 
Northwestern State's game-winning goal was set up by an LU miscue as the Cardinals surrendered an own goal in the 88th minute to tie the game at 1.
 
The homestanding Demons outshot Big Red, 17-10, with nine shots on goal. The Cardinals finished the night with 10 shots and seven on target. Sophomore Sandra Nygard finished the game with eight saves, while the Northwestern State keeper thwarted six shots.
 
Sophomore Esther Okoronkwo netted the game's opening score with a goal in the 59th minute to break up a scoreless tie. It appeared Okoronkwo's goal would serve as the difference in the game until the equalizer in the closing minutes of regulation. The Demons were able to get off two shots in the extra frame while the Cardinals were held without an attempt.
 
Neither team could break through the other's goal in the opening half. The two teams combined for 11 shots in the opening 45 minutes with each recording three on goal but all were deflected away by the goalkeeper.
 
The Cardinals return to action Sunday when they travel to Conway, Ark., to face Central Arkansas. The game against the Bears will begin at 1 p.m.
