Cards Dominate in GSU Finale

| By:
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ATLANTA - Winning the final match of the day in three sets and coming within a few points of sweeping Saturday, Lamar University's volleyball team (1-2) heads home with momentum on its side and a game plan for the next tournament. The Cardinals lost 3-2 at Georgia State and beat Western Carolina in three sets to close out the GSU Invitational.

"We have things to build on and hope to improve our performance before next weekend," said head ocach Michelle Kuester. "Against Georgia State we didn't do a great job of following the game plan consistently. We need to improve in the speed of which we adapt to what the other team is doing. After that match we had 30 minutes before our next warm up started and we spent it discussing how we needed to be the aggressor. The second match we did a much better job of putting the pressure on them. Kaitlyn Gil did a great job stepping in as a freshman and making big plays while remaining calm."

The first match of the day was against the tournament host, Georgia State. The Cardinals took the opening set in a demonstrative way, taking down the Panthers 25-19. Georgia State responded with a 25-19 win in the second set and a narrow 25-23 win in the third. Kuester and the Cards came back with a 25-18 fourth set victory only to run out of gas in the fifth, losing 15-7 and the match 3-2.

Abigale Nash had her second double-double in as many matches with 14 kills and 12 digs, and Nina Pevic and Dannisha House each had 10 kills with House recording six blocks and Pevic taking nine digs. Erin Pequeno collected 25 digs in the match.

Taking a cue from the morning match, Lamar came out aggressively in the finale, dominating Western Carolina from the get-go. The Cards swept the Catamounts 25-22, 25-18, and 25-19 with Nash recording another 11 kills. Kaityn Gil attacked at a .417 clip with five kills, a block, and seven digs, and Pequeno and Alyssa Legette each had 11 digs as well. Legette and Annika Slovak split the setting duties and each had double-digit assists.

The Cards reeturn to action on Friday with the Katrinka Crawford Invite.
