BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University softball team could not overcome a late run as they were defeated, 3-2, by Houston Baptist on Tuesday evening in non-conference action. The Huskies broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the seventh inning on a Cailtyn Brockway double.
Shannon Klaus led the Cards (22-28) with two hits in the contest while
Kimberly Mattox,
Jade Lewis,
Kelly Meeuwsen and
Elizabeth Castillo all picked up a hit for LU.
Julia Voluntad recorded six strikeouts in the game for the Cards.

The Huskies struck first against the Cardinals. After Voluntad recorded back-to-back strikeouts to start the game, Brockway walked and went to second base on a single by Janak. She came into score on a Bullen single through the right side.

With the game in favor of HBU, 1-0, LU scored its first runs of the game in the bottom of the third inning. Castillo led off with a bunt single and Klaus single to center moved Castillo to second. A sac bunt advanced both runners into scoring position. Mattox followed with a sac fly which scored one. Lewis followed with a single to left that scored the second run of the game for LU. After three innings of play, LU led 2-1.

HBU answered back in the top of the fourth inning. After a leadoff walk, Voluntad settled in and retired the next two hitters. With a runner on second and two outs, Sydlik doubled down the left field line scoring the tying run.

The game remained tied at 2-2 until the top of the seventh inning. With two outs, Lotz singled up the middle and came around to score on a Brockway double to left center. That would be all the Huskies would get in the inning as they took a 3-2 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh.

LU needed one run to force extras in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Klaus picked up her second hit of the game with a single up the middle.
Shaina Amir followed with a walk that moved Klaus to second base. However, the next two Cards were retired, and LU dropped the midweek contest, 3-2, to Houston Baptist.

Lamar returns to action on Friday, April 26 when they host Nicholls. It's the Cards Back the Blue Game as part of Law Enforcement Day. The Cardinals will wear a special Back the Blue jersey at the game. All law enforcement will be admitted FREE. First pitch of the contest is set for 5 p.m.
