Women’s Tennis Defeats Nicholls

THIBODAUX, La. – Lamar University scored the first six point of the day to cruise to a 6-1 victory over Nicholls Sunday afternoon to close out the 2019 regular season. The Cardinals currently sit in the eighth and final playoff spot for the Southland Conference Championships, but LU will need New Orleans to defeat Southeastern Louisiana Tuesday to qualify for the conference's postseason tournament.

"Our ladies came out ready to play today," said LU head coach David Wong. "I was proud of how they put the disappointment from Friday behind them and came focused. I thought Nicholls fought hard but we didn't allow them to make a significant run on any court."

The Cardinals had very little issue scoring the first point of the match rattling off consecutive 6-1 decisions on courts 1 and 2. LU quickly turned that into a 2-0 lead when Nicholls was forced to default on court 6 singles. Big Red turned to line 1 and junior Jasmin Buchta to take a 3-0 lead. Butcha defeated the Colonels' Lingfeng Gu in straight sets 7-5, 6-0.

With Buchta's victory in hand, the Cardinals needed just one win on the remaining four courts for the overall team win. LU wouldn't have to wait long to get that victory as the Cardinals took three of the final four courts. The deciding victory came from sophomore Amelie Vossgaetter on court No. 4. Vossgaetter recorded a straight-sets decision over Mariia Kozachok with  7-5 and 6-1 scores.

The Cardinals closed out the match with straight-set wins from junior Bianca Vitale (No. 2 singles) and sophomore Natalia Garcia Molina (No. 5) for the final score.
