BEAUMONT, Texas – A tennis match that switched venues twice within a 48-hour period, and was finally played at the original venue, got underway a couple hours after the original scheduled time. The numerous changes in the schedule appeared to impact the home team early as Lamar University was edged by Southeastern Louisiana, 4-3, in a Southland Conference tilt Friday afternoon from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
"It's always tough to lose a conference match, but it becomes that much more difficult when you know you had opportunities and just fell short," said LU head coach
David Wong. "Southeastern Louisiana is a very talented team so we knew today would be a fight. I thought we made a strong comeback late in the match but it was tough to overcome the loss in doubles.
"We put our freshman in a very tough spot this afternoon on court No. 6. She battled the whole match but came up just short in a tough three-setter. That is a lot to ask of your freshman," added Wong.
It was not a good start for the Red and White who dropped all three doubles matches and found itself down 3-0 after the first two singles matches ended. The Cardinals put a stop to SLU's match-opening offensive run with their victory on court No. 5. Sophomore
Amelie Vossgaetter earned a hard-fought three-set victory over Southeastern's Berna Dornieden, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.
The line five victory sparked a 3-0 run for the Cardinals who battled back to tie the match at 3 following their wins on courts two and three (
Bianca Vitale and
Sanja Jolic), respectively. That placed the outcome squarely on the shoulders of rookie
Laura Sola Grau at court 6.
After taking the opening set, 6-2, Sola Grau found herself in a dogfight in the second, but she came up short, 7-5, to Flory Bierma. Southeastern got the victory in the third set to close out the match.
The Cardinals will be back on the court Sunday to take on rival McNeese. The match will begin at 2 p.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
